Whats possibly the best looking little star crossed compact car to ever come down the pike?
The Chevrolet Vega of course!
A rare surviving specimen......
You’re looking at an honest to god first year 1971 Chevrolet Vega 2300 with only 21,000 miles!
This car has a really cute “baby Camaro” look that I can’t get over, I really like the damn little thing.
Not a V8 conversion, this still has its original alloy block and iron head 2.3 4 banger that it had when it rolled off the end of the line at GMAD Lordstown back when Nixon was president.
Finished in a tasty “cheese over almond” color combination, this little Vega boast a very clean and original interior.
There is the original 2300 in all its glory, and, according to the seller, it actually runs! Under that personal pan pizza sized air cleaner(which you were supposed to throw away and replace...the whole air cleaner, not just the element) lies a 1 barrel Rochester carburetor. Not much else on the option side as it looks like power steering and power brakes were not spec’d.
An automatic is present, which does rob the 90 or so hp base motor of extra spunk, in this early version it would most likely be the Chevrolet 2 speed Power Glide automatic, later Vegas got an air cooled Turbo-Hydramatic 350.
Early Vegas were also available with “you shift it” 2 speed semi-auto called the Torq-Drive, which was basically an Power Glide you had to shift from “Lo” to “Hi”.
Bidding is currently at $3511.....with 5 days to go, call Southebys, this might be a record setter.

They looked a bit like an Opel. I remember people liked them a bit back in the day.

Any Vega which has so improbably survived like this so long is clearly in the favor of all the deities ever and would inexplicably evade a nuclear strike.

This is one of those cars that ought to be worth about $35 and mysteriously gets two zeros added to its price. And then doubled. I’d love to drive it, but not for four digits of money.
Very cool, though, and thank you for sharing.

A Vega this nice is like having an asymptomatic extremely rare disease. Sure, you could brag about having inactive tubercules in your lungs, but why in the world would you want to have them in the first place?

My dad bought one of these new when he was fresh out of high school. Had it 3 months and paint on the fender started to bubble up. Dumped it and bought a used 68 corvette. Probably the right move.
